On Sunday, February 19, Bishop Luis Zarama celebrated Mass at the UNC Newman Center in Chapel Hill and visited afterwards with the community.
Prior to the Mass, several leaders from the community welcomed the bishop and thanked him for diocesan support through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, which has enabled their PATHS ministry to flourish.
PATHS encourages discipleship at UNC Newman through Prayer and a personal relationship with God; an Attitude of openness to grow in faith; Taking a greater part in Newman's community life; Heartfelt generosity; and to Serve others to build solidarity.
Reflecting on one of the readings (1 Cor 2:16-23), Bishop Luis encouraged the community to follow their dreams in this world but to also bear in mind that they should be seeking “degrees in holiness.” At the conclusion of Mass, he took the opportunity to encourage priestly vocations.
“We need priests,” Bishop Luis said. “The Church needs more people with a PhD in love, who are willing to serve our people.”
