When did you first consider a vocation to the permanent diaconate?
When I moved to Fayetteville 13 years ago.
What is your favorite part of being a deacon?
It is when I share the joy and emotion of parents and godparents baptizing their children, the nervousness of a married couple, the joy of a Quinceañera, and when I share the pain of a family that lost a loved one.
What would you say to someone considering the permanent diaconate?
If you feel a call to the diaconate, you must first consult with your family, approach your pastor, and talk with him about what you feel and above all pray, pray and continue to pray. The joy of serving God and his people is very special. God calls you to serve him just as you are.
What surprised you the most about the permanent diaconate?
I was surprised how God is helping you with your flaws, giving you the tools to conquer them. I never thought I would preach and proclaim God's word in English.
What is your favorite scripture passage?
“I praise you, LORD, for you raised me up and did not let my enemies rejoice over me. O LORD, my God, I cried out to you for help, and you healed me. LORD, you brought my soul up from Sheol; you let me live, from going down to the pit.” (Psalm 30: 1-4)
Who is your favorite saint and why?
Saint Francis of Assisi. He has accompanied me during my time of discernment to the diaconate, during my formation and now during my ministry.
